Three Ways To Optimize Your Ecommerce Site's Web Images To Improve Your Search Rankings

Blog

With all of the search engine optimization tactics available for eCommerce websites, it's easy to overlook image optimization. However, there are a few simple ways you can manipulate your web images to substantially improve your site's search rankings.

Start with the File Name

The file names of your images can play a minor role in search engine optimization. Relevant file names help search engines determine the content of the images. Using descriptive file names on your images can help them rank higher in user image searches and improve your onsite SEO.

For example, imagine you're uploading an image of a car exhaust system that you're promoting on your site. Depending on what camera and editing software you use, the default file name is most likely a series of irrelevant letters and numbers. However, if you rename the image file to "muscle car exhaust system" before you upload it, search engines will be able to better categorize the image and associate those keywords with your page.

Minimize File Sizes

Unnecessarily large file sizes also affect your site's search rankings, especially when it comes to mobile users. Large image files waste mobile users' limited data and increase your site's load time. They also can cause your site to stutter and freeze for users with slow Internet connections, which will increase your bounce rate.

Use your editing software to compress your images and minimize the file sizes of all your images. Obviously, you want to retain a resolution that is high enough so that your product images appear clear and crisp, but anything beyond that is wasteful and will impact your site's SEO. Before you upload your images, use your editing software to reduce them to the exact size that they will appear on your site. Then compress the images so that they will appear crisp at that size.

Take Advantage of Tags

Image "title" and "alt" tags give you another opportunity to improve your search rankings. "Title" tags tell search engines what is displayed in the image, and "alt" tags give a description of the image for search engines and visually impaired users. Both allow you to improve the ranking of your images and improve your on-site SEO with relevant keywords.

"Title" tags should be a very brief description of the image. For example, in the aforementioned image of a car exhaust system, you might include the following text after the link in your image's HTML tag: title="muscle car exhaust system".

Image "alt" tags are similar, except they can be a bit longer. They display a description of the image when users hover over the images with their cursors, and they also give visually-impaired users an audio description of the images when they're surfing the Internet with special browsers for their disabilities. In the above example, you might include the following text after the link in your image's HTML tag: alt="chrome aftermarket exhaust system for V8 muscle cars". It's a bit more descriptive than the "title" tag, which gives you the opportunity to include even more relevant keywords on your page.
